The Museum of Lacquer Miniatures
Museum
Palekh, Lenina Street, 16
Besides looking at the magnificent works of Palekh masters, in this museum you can immerse yourself in magical worlds. On a surface of a small box, miniaturists can fit the illustrations for an entire book: from The Tale of Tsar Saltan and Russian classical literature to the plots of masterpieces by Shakespeare, Moliere, and Goethe. A lot of paintings can be looked at for many hours. To make miniatures that detailed, artists often have to use a single hair instead of a brush.

Next to the classical subjects, you can find some very unusual ones, including the propaganda pictures of women's emancipation, portraits of political leaders, and illustrations for folk songs. Even nowadays artists haven't stopped experimenting. For instance, in modern miniatures, you can find Harry Potter and the characters from The Lord of the Rings.

In Palekh you are very likely to feel a creative urge to paint. This is precisely why the museum organizes painting workshops. You can decorate a small papier-mâché box and paint a "Golikovsky horse" or a Firebird, the symbol of Palekh.
