The Resurrection Cathedral is remarkable not only for the history of the new martyrs and the highest bell tower in Europe. The building of the cathedral is a monument of classicism of the late eighteenth century, and its history is closely connected with the miraculous Shuya-Smolensk icon of the Mother of God.

According to the legend, in 1655 the icon saved the town from an epidemic of pestilence, after which it performed dozens of miraculous healings. Even Peter the Great and Alexander II of Russia came to Shuya to kiss the miraculous icon.

In the middle of the last century, the icon disappeared, now a list of it has been installed in the cathedral. Also there you can see an icon of the Shuya new martyrs who died during the Shuya Case.
