The Asafovy Islands
Yuryevets
The Asafovy Islands are truly the most beautiful place in Ivanovo Region. The islands came out when the Gorkovskoe Reservoir was under construction. Before the flooding the islands were hills. They are named after the local outlaw Asaf who was hiding in the hills near Yuryevets.
In the 1950s a part of Yuryevets and its surrounding area were drowned due to the Gorkovskoe Reservoir construction. Now many villages, churches, monasteries are on the bed of the Gorky Sea. But the Asafovy hills were high and a part of the hilltops became islands.
There are five islands of total length of 4 kilometers and of 65 square kilometers of total area. White sand dunes surrounded by pine trees and birches remind of the Seaside of Riga.
The Asafovy Islands is a unique natural monument that is of historical and recreational importance. Lakes rich in fish attract fishermen and researchers there. And sand beaches are perfect for campings.
